How are the types of social security benefits different?

There are many different groups of people who collect social security benefits in Georgia. This program is designed to help all workers and their families. Social Security for disability is just one type. When applying for benefits, you need to understand which type you should apply for or it could affect your ability to get your application approved.

The Social Security Administration explains that there are three types of benefits. Disability is for disabled individuals. If you are unable to work due to an injury at work, a spouse of an injured worker with a child under 16 or disabled child or a child of a disabled worker, then you could be eligible for this type of benefit.

The next type is called survivor benefits. These are for the family of a deceased worker. If you are a widow, you may be able to collect your spouse’s benefits if you are over 50 years old with a disability or have children who are under 16 or disabled. If you do not have children or are not disabled, then you may still be able to collect benefits if you are over the age of 60. Parents may also collect benefits if they were financially dependent on their child. Children can get benefits if they are under 18 or still in high school and under the age of 19. Children who were disabled before the age fo 22 also can collect benefits.

The final type of Social Security benefits are for retired workers who are at least 62 years old. As a spouse, you may also be able to collect these benefits on your spouse’s account if you have children under the age of 16 or who are disabled. Children may also collect if they meet the same requirements as for survivor benefits. This information is for education and is not legal advice.
